How to Ace an Assessment Day

Assessment days can be absolutely nerve-wracking for anyone having to go through them. It can seem like you're being put on the spot in front of a lot of people, and you might feel like you can't adequately perform. If you've been told to appear for an assessment day, don't worry just yet! You can learn how to ace an assessment day by following these tips. It's simple to remember, simple to do, but with amazing results!

Be Prepared

Just like with anything else, if you don't go into it prepared, you're going to have a bad time of it. Instead, take time before the big day to think about how you'll go about certain tasks during the assessment. You should know how you are going to introduce yourself, and should practice doing so. A simple presentation may be required of you; jot down idea following the old standards, including things such as your hobby, a great day, or your favorite childhood memory.

Always Simplify

It might seem like a good idea, to try to wow people with the fantastic detail that you put into your work. However, if you turn in work that, while amazingly detailed, is missing half of its substance, you're not going to do well. In an assessment, the process itself that you follow is more important than what you actually produce. (Though don't turn in absolutely shoddy work, either!) Keep things simple, and you'll fare better.

Careful Listening and Cooperation

There are almost always group exercises on assessment days, and there's a good reason for that. The people assessing you are likely wondering how well you do in a group, since most jobs require a team effort. One of the best ways to give a good impression is to focus on completing these tasks with others. First, you should always listen when others are talking. This lets you get a good idea of what they are actually suggesting. Second, cooperate. Though it might not be your favorite idea, if the group decides on something, try to go along with it. Don't argue!

Actually Participate!

While you shouldn't be overly assertive or argumentative, that doesn't mean that you should sit around in the back and just wait to be handed something to do. You should actually participate in your assessment day to make the best impression! Ask questions when it's appropriate, give your opinion when it's warranted, and do whatever task you're assigned while you're there. This will make you seem like a hard worker who can think critically.

Act Like Yourself

This is one of the more difficult things to do:  Be yourself. It might be tempting to put on a completely new personality, in order to make yourself look better. Don't. It can be difficult, or even impossible, to keep that persona up at a job, and it's going to come out sooner or later. Instead, act like yourself… but a more professional version.

Assessment days can make even the best of us nervous. But, if you keep these tips in mind and, most importantly, be yourself, you'll be able to do well and hopefully get a nice career boost out of it!
