Step by step
How to Be a Fashion Designer

It's a rapidly growing profession, and one that a lot of people aspire to join:  Fashion design. Fashion designers are now ranked among celebrities, and there are even television shows pitting designers against one another, to determine which is best. If you're wanting to break into this field, then you're going to need more than just raw talent. For those wondering how to be a fashion designer, read these tips and follow them. They'll help you advance!

Brush Up On Your Sewing Skills

Being able to draw the fashions isn't enough! All fashion designers will need to pick up needle and thread while working… or dig out a sewing machine. You'll need to have a good grasp about the technical aspects of sewing, and be able to follow patterns and work without them. Learn how to use a sewing machine, if you don't know how. Also learn how to hands sew; it gives a certain quality to a project!

Study Your Fabric

This goes hand in hand with the last tip. Not only should a good fashion designer be able to sew well, they should also be intimately familiar with the cloth that they use. This can be tricky, because there are so many different kinds. But you should learn what works best. If you're looking for something to drape, go with a type of cloth that drapes well. Need something sturdy? Go for a stiffer fabric. Writing a cheat sheet helps with this in the beginning.

Learn From Designers...and Competitors

You read that right! The two groups of people you need to study more than anything are the existing fashion designers in the niche you want to join, and the competitors that are looking to take your place in that niche. Knowing what other people are doing will inspire you, as well as keep you even with the ever-evolving fashion world. Take note of what they're designing, and if other are finding it possible as well.

Get a Degree...

This isn't an easy tip, but it's one that can get you far into the fashion world. Getting a degree in fashion design is a great way to make you seem less like a layperson trying to make it big, and more like a dedicated professional looking to join a promising field. This isn't something to take lightly, but, if you are serious and willing to devote a few years of your life, this can make or break a career.

...Or an Internship

Don't want to spend years of your life working towards a degree? Or maybe college just isn't feasible? If that's true for you, then you should look for internships with designers and design firms. These can help give you on-the-job experience, which looks amazing on a resume. Some internships will be paid; others won't be. But, whichever the case is, your internship will help you stand out amongst a sea of those with no experience in fashion design.

Making it as a fashion designer is a hard process. You have to be knowledgeable about anything related to fashion, and be willing to put in the work. But, if you do that, you can succeed as a fashion designer!
