How to Change Careers After 50

It's Never Too Late for Your Dream Job

Starting a new career is hard enough when you're in your 20s, and are just starting off in the world. But many people wanting to reinvent themselves later on in life must be wondering if it's even possible. After all, learning how to change careers after 50 isn't something that many people think about. However, with the right process and expectations, you can jump into this new career path just the same as you would thirty years ago.

Don't Quit Your Day Job… Yet

It might be tempting to tell the boss that you quit, walk out, find your dream job, and ride off into the sunset. Unfortunately, it isn't going to be that easy. Starting a new career, particularly in today's job market, isn't an easy feat for anybody, regardless of age. If you've got a job right now, keep it until one seems to be more imminent. After all, you still have bills to pay and food to buy, and jobs don't come as quickly as they once did.

Decide Which Career You Want

You might already have the perfect career stuck in your mind, but do some research first. You might find that the job you've had your eye on doesn't cover the role that interests you most, or that it involves something that is a complete deal-breaker for you. If you haven't completely decided what you want to do, now is the time to sit down and figure it out. Talk with family and friends; they can help point you in the right direction.

What Are Your Qualifications?

Before you can start applying for your dream job, you'll need to see if you're qualified. Nowadays, most jobs require a college degree in a related field, and the higher ranking the position, the higher your degree should be. Qualifications have changed since you first joined the job market, and you should plan accordingly. Otherwise, you might be disappointed when none of your applications go through because you aren't qualified. That brings us to the next question….

Do You Need More Education?

Just as it's never too late to start your dream career, it's never too late to get the right education to get you the job! A lot of careers require college degrees where they didn't require them before, so make sure that you have all of the education that is required before putting in an application. And if you do need more education? Try taking night classes, or enroll in an online college.

Prepare for a Job Hunt

Job hunts have changed dramatically, even in the last decade or so. Nowadays, applying for jobs is done almost strictly online. Still, there are a few things that haven't changed. For one, you should prepare a resume, which will be included in any applications you put in, either online or in-person. You should also gather some references, so that you can provide numbers for potential employers to call. Lastly, scrub your internet life; you're likely going to be Googled.

Changing up careers after 50 might seem to be a bit of a stretch. But, just like starting your first career, all it takes is the right qualifications, tenacity, and know-how.
